What are mini dental implants?
Mini dental implants are a modern way of replacing teeth that enables patients to achieve many of the same terrific results as a traditional root-form dental implant, but with a smaller implant that requires less healing time and is more economical.
Mini dental implants work in a similar way as traditional implants: they are designed to function like a tooth root to provide security and stability for either an individual false tooth or to secure dentures in place to avoid issues with dentures slipping or falling out. The diameter of mini dental implants is about the same as a toothpick, whereas traditional implants are about the same dimensions as a screw. The smaller size has several benefits:
- Less complex surgery – the procedure for placing mini implants only takes one visit that takes an hour or two, is performed with local anesthesia, and typically does not even require sutures
- Reduced healing time – instead of waiting for months for the implant to heal, mini implants can often be topped with your false tooth or dentures on the same day as they are placed, and most discomfort from the procedure resolves within a few days
- Less bone is necessary – because mini dental implants are smaller, patients who have insufficient bone for a traditional implant can still be good candidates for mini implants, and can avoid costly bone grafts to build up the bone
- Long-lasting – like traditional implants, mini implants can last for your lifetime if you take proper care of your teeth
