Gum Disease treatment in Wichita KS

Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is a condition found in many patients. If left untreated it can lead to serious problems including tooth loss. Gum disease begins as plaque buildup on the teeth. Unattended, the plaque then hardens to form tartar, creates damage to the teeth and gums, and may create pockets for bacteria between the teeth and gums.

Located in Wichita, Kansas, Dr. David Koepsel believes patient education is crucial to treating gum disease. Patients who commit to regular dental exams and good home oral health habits have treatments that are more successful. During oral exams, dentists are able to check for periodontal disease and take the necessary precautions should early signs of the disease appear.

When gum disease is caught early and controlled, patients are able to keep their own teeth and maintain healthier mouths. Unfortunately, for those who do not seek early treatment for gum disease, the disease further develops causing irreversible problems.

Gum disease develops through stages with the first being gingivitis. Patients suffering from gingivitis have red, swollen, and bleeding gums. If gingivitis goes untreated, it develops into periodontitis. During this phase, the gums and bones become damaged. In later, more developed stages of the disease, the teeth may become loose or fall out.

Periodontal disease must be treated. This is not something that will improve over time. Dr. Koepsel assesses each patient to determine the necessary treatment. Treatment is generally performed with a laser. The laser allows for a more conservative treatment than oral surgery but is just as effective. Dr. Koepsel has three lasers to offer different levels of treatment based on the patient's need. The laser is able to sterilize the area around the teeth and gums to eliminate the infection.

For more advanced stages of gum disease, medications may be offered as well. Once bacteria invade your mouth, your entire body is open to disease as well. Gum disease can cause further health problems. It is important to seek treatment if you suspect this disease.
