Wichita KS Dentist explains, What is a Root Canal?
What is a root canal? Wichita, KS dentists will explain that root canal therapy is the removal of dental pulp from the center of the tooth. Dental pulp is a collection of tissues, nerves, and the blood vessels. It is housed within the tooth, and it provides the blood supply and sensors for the tooth. If a tooth is infected, or has an extremely deep cavity, then root canal therapy may be the procedure of choice.
Before root canal therapy is done, patients can discuss with their dentist the benefits of sedation in addition to local anesthesia. This combination will allow a patient to be relaxed, calm, and comfortable because it will ease any discomfort or fears a patient may have about the procedure. The actual treatment will not be painful—patients will be numbed accordingly.
During the treatment, the dentist will drill a hole into the tooth. This allows him to access the dental pulp within. The dental pulp is removed, and then the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected. The area is then filled and the tooth may be finished with a dental crown on top. A crown is often placed to protect the tooth, as the removal of the dental pulp can cause it to become weak and brittle. Patients will then receive aftercare instructions, and might be a little sore for the rest of the day after the anesthetics have worn off. However, the pain and discomfort that the patient felt before the treatment was completed will be gone, and that patient will be on the road to recovery quickly. Patients will be able to enjoy the benefits of keeping their natural tooth and avoid the need for a replacement.
